Our friends at the FBI have a program (officially called an "FBI Departmental Order")  that allows individual citizens to request their "FBI Identification Record" - often referred to as a criminal history record or "rap sheet." 

People may use a copy of this criminal history record (or a letter that says there is no record) for the following reasons:

• For personal review
• To challenge the information on record
• To satisfy a requirement for child adoption
• To satisfy a requirement to live, work or travel in a foreign country
• For "other court-related matters"

Personal Identification Record Requests are not acceptible for criminal history background checks for US domestic employment or licensing.  Those requests must be made through the employer.

While intended to convenience citizens, the process should warn, "don't try this at home."

• Must make fingerprint cards
• Must endure indignities of a police station
• Must make perfect cards with perfect prints or weeks later, do over
• Must fill out a complicated form
• Must wait a long time (card processing is slow)
• Must complete the form perfectly or weeks later, do over.
